Build the Comparison Before You Write the Review

The content structure began with buyer criteria instead of a product the site wanted to recommend.

Criteria first. Comparison second. Recommendation last.

A coffee review can start with the machine. That is certainly convenient if the machine already has a nice commission attached to it. The buyer usually starts somewhere else: bitter coffee, a small counter, a tight budget, or six sleepy people waiting for one pot.

If I choose the product first, the whole article bends toward defending that choice. Features that help my recommendation suddenly feel essential. Tradeoffs become tiny footnotes. By the end, I am not reviewing a product so much as writing its closing argument.

The comparison comes before the recommendation

So I write the decision criteria first: capacity, brew method, cleanup, counter space, price, or whatever actually changes the choice. Then the products have to compete on those terms. Sometimes the product I expected to recommend still wins. Sometimes it does not. Both outcomes make the article more useful.

The criteria also give the reader a way to disagree intelligently. They can say, “Cleanup does not matter to me, but counter space does,” and adjust the recommendation for their life. That is much more helpful than asking them to trust a mysterious overall score assembled behind the curtain.

Try this on your blog

  1. Write the buyer’s situation without naming a product.
  2. Choose the three criteria that would change the answer.
  3. Compare the options before adding the affiliate button.

You’re done when: The buyer situation and three decision criteria appear before the first recommendation.

If the same product wins every version of the question, the question probably was not real—or the affiliate dashboard has quietly become the editor. Build the comparison while you can still be surprised by the answer.
