The Title Rule I Use on Smaller Sites
I stopped copying “Ultimate Guide” titles from giant publishers and matched the promise to the authority the site actually had.

I was optimizing a newer client site and kept seeing giant publishers ranking with some version of “The Ultimate Guide to Everything.”
Copying them would make the client sound familiar. It would not give Google—or the reader—a reason to choose the smaller site.
The constraint became the advantage
I kept the title under 60 characters, matched the slug to the primary query, and used the description for one specific benefit and next step.
Then I removed the words doing fake authority work: ultimate, complete, definitive, everything.
Steal this
Replace the giant adjective with one useful constraint: the exact reader, decision, timeframe, location, or tradeoff your page handles better.
Smaller sites do not need bigger claims. They need tighter ones.
